Thursday's Thoughts- Psalm One

Psalm One Verse 1- In this verse, the writer commends the man who does not associate himself with sinners. He doesn't take counsel with ungodly and listen to their advice. This man doesn't walk in the sinner's footsteps. In other words, he walks a different path than sinful men. He doesn't participate in their activities or copy their actions. He is following God's instructions to be different from the world.  Verse 2- This man delights himself in the law of the Lord. Nothing makes him happier than reading God's word and talking to Him no matter what time of day it is. Verse 3- A Christian who witnesses for the Lord is like a tree. He brings others to Christ like the tree produces fruit. Anything that he does in the name of God will prosper.  Verse 4- In this verse the writer likens the ungodly to chaff. When wheat is tossed into the wind, the grain will fall back into the basket, but the chaff blows away in the wind.  Verse 5- When we get to the judge...

Thursday's Thoughts- Would You Stand?

Would You Stand? I have a very important question for you. Would you stand? This sounds like a simple inquiry, but it just may prove to be one of the most difficult ones you will ever be asked. What if you are sitting in church Sunday morning and suddenly masked men burst through the door holding rifles? Imagine that the leader announces that anyone who doesn't deny Christ will be shot. Maybe half the church chooses to denounce God and leave, but will you? Will the threat of death turn you away from your faith? Let me tell you about three men in the Bible who let absolutely nothing get in the way of their faith.  Travel back to the Old Testament with me and see a man who set his faith in God. His name was Noah. God told Noah to build an ark because He was going to send rain to flood the whole earth. Any other man would have laughed because, up until that time, it had never rained before, but Noah and his sons got right to work. For years they labored while their friends and ne...

Thursday's Thoughts- Jonah Chapter Four

Thursday's Thoughts- Jonah Chapter Four 1-3. God was quick to forgive Nineveh, but, like most people, Jonah had some issues with accepting His plan. He had heard God swear to destroy the city, and then, just as quickly, forgive them of everything and spare their lives. His response was to immediately question God. Here he was in his enemies city waiting for them to be overthrown like they had done to Israel and God was changing his mind. He was so upset that he even told God it would be better for him to die than live another moment. 4-11. In his fit of rage, Jonah left the city and went into the mountains to see if God would really spare the city. It was hot so God made a gourd to grow up to give Jonah some shade. Jonah was more than happy for the plant and accompanying shade and he rested. To teach him a lesson, God made a worm to destroy the plant while Jonah slept. In the morning, God sent a hot wind which scorched Jonah until he felt that he'd rather die. Now comes Go...

Thursday's Thoughts- Jonah Chapter Three

Jonah Chapter Three What a wild ride Jonah has had. He boarded a boat which got caught in a storm due to his own disobedience, was thrown over board and swallowed by a fish, but now he is on dry land and on his way to Nineveh. 1-4. God came to Jonah a second time and told him to go to Nineveh. This time Jonah wisely accepted. Jonah went to his enemies and told them that if they didn't repent withing forty days their city would be destroyed.  5-10. The people heard Jonah and immediately repented. Their king proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth which simbalized mourning. The people turned from their adultery, thievery and murder and cried out to God for forgiveness. They feared God would not hear them, but they prayed anyway. Of course, God heard their prayers and He decided not to destroy the city, because He is a God of second chances. Just like in the last chapter we see that God will always forgive us.

Thursday's Thoughts- Jonah Chapter Two

Jonah Chapter Two At the end of the last chapter, Jonah had just been swallowed by the great fish. We will pick up in chapter two in the belly of the fish.  1-10. By this point Jonah has accepted what we already know to be true- you can't run from God. Being swallowed by a large fish after being thrown into a stormy sea has put his life into perspective. (It would mine too.) Jonah preceded to do what all of us should do in time of need, he prayed. His prayer can be applied to our downfalls as well because, even though he had run from God and there seemed to be no hope, he still cried out to his Savior. Jonah realized that God would hear his prayer and, being the just God that He is, would forgive him. He repented of his sin and promised to do as God had commanded and go to Nineveh. Merciful God then commanded the fish to spit him out on dry land.  The end of the chapter is proof of just how forgiving God is. Jonah directly disobeyed Him, but when he was willing to repen...
